-Primarily haploid
-Predominant way of reproduction is asexual.
-Sexual reproduction is more beneficial because it creates genetic diversity, which is essential for survival and adaptation.
-Ability to produce rapidly
Cycle
1. It begins with the cyst, which lies in the sediment; it is possible for it to reside there for a long span of time.
2. A trigger then occurs, such as an increase in nutrients or temperature. The vegetative stage then begins.
3. In the vegetative stage, reproduction occurs asexually. This reproduction is rapid and produces millions of cells.
4. However, if the condition changes are not optimal, such as lowering of nutrients, lights, and temperature, reproduction will occur sexually. This produces gametes, which forms the zygote stage.
5. The zygote stage then leads to the cyst stage, and the cycle begins again.
